Fiat lux.
Let there be light. Disclosure is the disinfectant — switch the lights on and the dodgy stuff scarpers.
Uberrima fides.
Utmost good faith. Issuers owe the market the whole truth, not a cheeky half of it.
Caveat emptor.
Let the buyer beware. Have a proper butcher's before you have a punt.
Verba volant, scripta manent.
Spoken words fly away; written words remain. Chat at the pub is nothing — the disclosure is what counts.
Pacta sunt servanda.
Agreements must be kept. A listing is a promise to the public. Keep it, full stop.
Nemo dat quod non habet.
No one gives what they do not have. Negative equity? Then there's precious little to give, innit.
Res ipsa loquitur.
The thing speaks for itself. Let the numbers do the talking — no waffle required.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Who will guard the guardians themselves? Regulators watch the market; the public watches them both.
Magna est veritas, et praevalebit.
Truth is great, and it will prevail. Cook the books and it all comes out in the wash eventually.
Bona fides.
Good faith. The bare minimum for anyone handling other people's dosh.
Ubi societas, ibi ius.
Where there is society, there is law. Where there's a market there are rules — no faffing about.
Diligentia quam in suis.
The diligence one gives to one's own affairs. Directors should mind the company's quid as if it were their own.
